We will start off with breakfast at Rathbun’s Maple Sugar House in Granville (Whitehall address: 1208 Hatch Hill Rd, Whitehall, NY.) It’s pancakes, waffles, french toast with pure maple syrup. They also have eggs. Menu online.
Then it’s a short (15-20 min.) drive over to Haystack Mt. in Pawlet, VT to work it off. This is a short 3-mile RT hike with excellent views overlooking Granville, the Mettawee Valley, and the Adirondacks in the distance. Elevation gain is only about 900′ to reach summit elevation of 1930′. It’s a short but steady climb with a steep section near the top.
This preserve features a series of rounded, forested peaks in the northern Taconic Mountains, clustered in an extensive landscape of unbroken forest. Locals call Haystack, Middle and Bald Mountains the Three Sisters. Warm southern aspect and shallow soils produce drought-like conditions on the hills and promote the growth of several unusual natural communities, including dry oak woodlands and dry oak-hickory-hophornbeam forests. Turkeys, grouse and bobcats roam the rocky landscape. Peregrine falcons sometimes nest on the cliffs of Haystack. These forested hills also provide nesting habitat for neotropical migrant songbirds that rely on unfragmented forest blocks.
